Department description:

  • Technical/Development Engineering develops new products, both for our catalogue and also to meet customer's specific requirements.
  • This includes designing the product, selecting materials, manufacture or purchase of tooling, trialling the product and testing samples to ensure that they meet the product specification.
  • The manufacturing processes include; plastic injection moulding, crosshead and corrugation extrusion, metal turning, metal forming and assembly

Job Purpose:

  • Reporting to the Technical Director the post holder will be responsible for planning and organising the work of the engineering team and others engaged in research and development of materials, components and products.
  • To manage product development projects with particular emphasis on viability, design, material selection, injection moulding and extrusion processing and testing and approvals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluation of viability of project opportunity including payback period and resource and capital requirements
  • Design and development of new products with particular focus on the material aspects of product design, tooling and the manufacturing process
  • Selection of suitable polymers, including performance, processing and cost
  • Project management ensuring that projects comes in on time and within budget
  • Participation in the trialling of new products
  • Testing of new products and obtaining of 3rd party approvals where appropriate
  • Provide application advice to customers and end users
  • Participation in the design and manufacture /purchase of tooling
  • Consideration of factors that affect product life
  • Carry out process and design FMEAs
  • Occasional travel, including overseas, to our other facilities, Supplier and/or Customer sites may be required from time to time, sometimes involving staying overnight - for which adequate notice will be given

Main Job Requirements & Person Specification

Education, Qualification & Training:

  • Good A Levels in Maths and Physics
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Polymer Science would be an advantage

Specific Experience:

  • Project Management and delivery of new product development
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Design of moulded parts using engineering plastics
  • Use of 3D CAD, preferably Solidworks
  • Selection of Materials and evaluation of finished product performance
  • Direct contact with OEM customers
